Staying optimistic can be difficult even in the best of times, but when the news seems to be consistently bad, it’s hard for even the most optimistic person to remain positive. But that only means we have to make an effort to focus on the good things. Not sure how? Here are three things you can do:
Take a trip down memory lane.
You have probably endured many other unpredictable life disruptions. Perhaps you’ve had a death in the family, or your friends lost a home in an earthquake or hurricane. Or perhaps you were severely affected by the financial fiasco in ’08? Think about how you got through those times—because you did. And you’re a much stronger person because of all of that. Take some time out of every day to remind yourself that you do have resilience .
Take care of the people around you.
It’s important to follow CDC guidelines and remain safe. If someone you know does get sick, just take a few moments to call them or safely check in on them. Doing this will not only make them feel special, but it will also make you feel much, much better about our current predicament, especially if you ask them what you can do to help—then act.
Send surprise gifts through the mail.
You may not always be able to stop by with baked cookies , so sending someone you love a care package or even a card in the mail can be a wonderful surprise. This is an especially effective way to show you care to the older generation who may not be able to reciprocate. Many nursing homes have shut their doors to visitors, making the elderly who live there feel even more vulnerable and isolated.
When the world seems to be caving in on itself, it’s hard for anyone to remain positive. But we have to keep going. We have to remember that we’ll get through this. And if it’s in our capabilities, we have to show others that it’s going to be okay as well.
